Dane Cook is a Hack
You know, it’s great that Dane Cook knows how to use e-mail and somehow that has convinced millions of college students that he’s funny, but seriously. He has about four jokes that he just retells all of the time, and even those aren’t funny. Wow, it would be hilarious if you pushed a little kid’s ice cream cone in his face. So I had to laugh at this post about the editing on his show, because I saw in the credits last week that Dane Cook edits his own show. Big surprise that the show is edited to make Dane Cook look great and everyone else on the tour look like whiny assholes. It’s nice that he’s using his star power to help out his friends like that.

Molly and I were just emailing back and forth about this show yesterday. I missed that the fat guy went to a hospital in Syracuse when he got hurt last week. Probably b/c I was fast forwarding through it so much. I just don’t think Dane Cook is that funny. I’ve heard a couple of his CD’s and they just don’t do it for me. Now that I know he edits his own show, it all makes sense as to why it takes me 5 minutes to watch this show.

I’ve seen his special on Comedy Central, and I liked it, but there are other comedians I like a lot more (Maria Bamford, Greg Behrendt, etc.)

I checked, after watching the SNL that he hosted, when he started doing stand-up and when Will Ferrell came on the scene. He pretty much started when the world was quoting Will Ferrell’s “not quite dead yet” scene in Austin Powers. To me, it seems like Dane Cook is doing an endless Will Ferrell impersonation.

He’s got a tremendous amount of energy. I have nothing else to add to that. That’s all he’s got. I think people get sucked in by his enthusiasm for his own jokes? I dunno. I am at a loss to explain the Dane Cook Phenomenon.

The Dane Cook phenomenon is more difficult to explain than string theory or relativity. He’s the Nickelback of stand-up comedy.
