I redid the reviews section last night. I didn't write any new reviews yet, but that's the next step. It was kind of interesting -- I think I first designed that section about 9 months ago, and it felt good to see that my skills have increased since then. Oh, and also I got my grades for last semester and I got two A's -- a 4.0! That brings my GPA up to 3.909! So that was pretty exciting.
On to the business of the day: the second half of my Golden Globes picks. Oh, I should thank Stee for pointing out that Hilary Swank was actually the Next Karate Kid, and I have corrected that in yesterday's entry. He schooled
my ass in Karate Kid lore, yo.
Best Television Series - Drama
- ER
- Once and Again
- The Practice
- The Sopranos
- The West Wing
ER is right out because it hasn't been a good show in a while. I still watch it, but it's not as good as the first few seasons. The Practice is out because last year was David E. Kelley's year, and I think everyone is kind of over him now. Once and Again and The West Wing are both good shows, but they are too new. Plus, The Sopranos got robbed at the Emmys, and they have the momentum and the buzz, so they will win.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Drama
- Lorraine Bracco - The Sopranos
- Amy Brenneman - Judging Amy
- Edie Falco - The Sopranos
- Julianna Margulies - ER
- Sela Ward - Once and Again
It's possible that the two nominees from The Sopranos will split the vote and Margulies will win because it's her last season on the show. But I don't see that happening. I think Bracco will win.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Drama
- Billy Campbell - Once and Again
- James Gandolfini - The Sopranos
- Rob Lowe - West Wing
- Dylan McDermott - The Practice
- Martin Sheen - West Wing
Fuhgeddaboudit. Gandolfini will walk with this one.
Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy
- Ally McBeal
- Dharma & Greg
- Sex and the City
- Spin City
- Will & Grace
Dharma & Fucking Greg? Are you kidding me with that? Where did that come from? See my above reasoning for why Ally won't win. Of the remaining three, I think Spin City is past its prime. Will & Grace, while funny, gets a little tired after a while. So I think Sex and the City
will take it. Man, HBO will have such a field day!
Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Musical or Comedy
- Jenna Elfman - Dharma & Greg
- Calista Flockhart - Ally McBeal
- Felicity Huffman - Sports Night
- Heather Locklear - Spin City
- Debra Messing - Will & Grace
- Sarah Jessica Parker - Sex and the City
I would really, really like to see Felicity Huffman win this one. Sports Night is a great show, and she is excellent in it. Plus if Elfman or Flockhart win, I will kill myself because I can't take either of them.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Musical or Comedy
- Michael J. Fox - Spin City
- Thomas Gibson - Dharma & Greg
- Eric McCormack - Will & Grace
- Ray Romano - Everybody Loves Raymond
- George Segal - Just Shoot Me
It is a crime that Matt LeBlanc did not get nominated here, because he has been hilarious on Friends for the past few seasons. Maybe he is considered a supporting actor? He didn't get nominated there either. Fox won the last two years, so he's out. I'm going with Ray Romano.
I'm skipping all the Movies Made for Television bullshit, because no one really cares.
The next category name is way too long, so I'm shortening it.
Best Supporting Actress in anything shown on Television
- Kathy Bates - Annie
- Jacqueline Bisset - Joan of Arc
- Kim Cattrall - Sex and the City
- Melanie Griffith - RKO 281
- Nancy Marchand - The Sopranos
- Cynthia Nixon - Sex and the City
- Miranda Richardson - The Big Brass Ring
Do you think that other Sex and the City chick feels bad that she was the only one who didn't get nominated for an award? I hate to be repetitive, but I think Nancy Marchand will win. Not only did she put in a great performance, but she is ill and voters love that shit (see Michael J. Fox).
Best Supporting Actor in anything shown on Television
- Klaus Maria Brandauer - Introducing Dorothy Dandridge
- Peter Fonda - The Passion of Ayn Rand
- Sean Hayes - Will & Grace
- Chris Noth - Sex and the City
- Peter O'Toole - Joan of Arc
- David Space - Just Shoot Me
This is kind of like the old fogies versus the young upstarts, isn't it? If there is any justice in this world, Sean Hayes will win. He is the funniest thing on that show, and the reason I think most people watch. Just Jack! |

One of the biggest experts on Y2K is still ringing the alarm. I'm glad someone pointed out that not only is he telling everyone about the dangers, but then he offers to be a consultant and
tell you how to fix your problems, for a reasonable fee. But his warnings aren't self-serving at all. I'm not saying we won't have any more problems, but I think it pays to look at who is delivering the message.
Phantom
Menace will be released on video on April 4 worldwide. No DVD plans as of yet - rumor has it that Lucas may wait until the next two films come out and then release all the DVDs at once.
Rosie O'Donnell adopted another baby. Why does everyone make a big deal about her not being married? I mean, we all know
she prefers the company of women, and I wish she would just come out already. But I applaud her adopting children if she has a lot of love to give them.
How I love celebrity gossip! Madonna
gave the cold shoulder to Jennifer Lopez on New Year's Eve, probably due to some disparaging remarks Lopez made in an interview in 1998.
The
guy who hit Steven King will not go to jail. That just seems so wrong, but I know it happens all the time.
I really have to start paying attention to the Presidential race. As a former political science major, I really get into all the machinations and posturing. Anyway, there was a Gore/Bradley debate last night.
Michael
Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones are engaged. Anyone want to start a pool on when they will split up? I give it two years.
The madness will continue: the votes have been counted and 91% of the people want the Beanie Babies line to continue. Also, Ty is introducing some new lines. How rich are the owners
of that company, anyway? They must be like rock star rich.
So this
fitness site claims that if you send them a digital photo of yourself, they can show you what you would look like if you lost weight. Does it work? Who knows? But it's getting a lot of media coverage, so much so that I couldn't get into the site for a while today. I might try it and I'll be sure to post the results if I do!
Jim's
favorite book, Ender's Game, is being made into a movie. Or at least, Orson Scott Card is trying to make it into a movie. If you haven't read this book, you really must. I am not a science fiction fan, but I loved this book. |
