June 14, 2000

One year ago: My review of the Journey/Foreigner concert. I went with my mom. It was really fun.

I know it's been a long time since I updated, but first I was trying to get all my work done before Wing Chun got here, then she was here, then Jim came home and had some time off, and I've just been hanging out with people! You should be happy for me! I have a life! Anyway, now I'm updating.

Okay, so Jim had to go out of town on business from last Wednesday through Sunday. Last weekend, during the Real World marathon, Wing and I were ICQing about how she was missing out (they don't have MTV in Canada), and how I was taping all the seasons for her, and how cool it would be if we could watch them together, and somehow we ended up deciding that she should come down to visit while Jim was out of town and we would have a big marathon with all the tapes. She claims she invited herself, but I don't remember it like that. Anyway, Wednesday I had to get up at the crack of dawn to take Jim to the airport because I'm a good girlfriend. Not so good that I went in and waited with him, but I did drop him off. That afternoon, I went with Mary and Molly to the Parade of Homes. You may remember that we also attended last year. Anyway, it was nice, the homes were pretty, blah blah blah. In one house, they were offering freshly-baked chocolate chip cookies and Mary and I practically pushed each other out of the way to get one. Molly was the voice of reason and suggested that we wait until we finished touring the house to get a cookie, because then we wouldn't get chocolate all over the house. Mary and I ran from room to room and then went back downstairs to claim our booty -- but the cookies were all gone. Molly felt so bad, and I didn't help matters by continually referring back to it. It was pretty funny. Then Mary came over and we ordered in pizza and watched Survivor and it was great. She is so fun.

So Wing arrived on Thursday, bearing a beautiful gift package for me from Lush as a thank-you for taping the Real World for her. Thursday night we hung out and watched the MTV Movie Awards (which were boring) and then the New York season (which rocked).

Friday, I had to meet with my consulting client in the morning. When I got home, we went to Old Navy, because they don't have it in Canada. I bought some more flood pants and Wing bought a bunch of stuff. We took some detours to different parts of town so I could show Wing where I went to college and she pretended to be interested, because she's polite. Then we went to Wegman's, where Wing went a little crazy with the American snack food. Apparently, all they sell in Canada is jam and crackers in the way of snack food. We came home and consumed massive amounts of junk food while watching the snore-inducing London season. I was all defending London as being under-rated, but it put us both into comas. Or maybe it was all the sugar.

After waking up from our comas on Saturday, we went to Balloon Fest to see supergush play (and that's where the pictures on this page are from -- the top one is Terry and the bottom one is Stimp). It was incredibly hot, even though we got there around noon. We stayed for supergush and then watched an Irish boy band called "Westlife" that I had never heard of. They were the lamest boy band. Their choreography consisted of waving their arms around in a lacksadaisical manner and then at the end of every song, they clumped together in the middle of the stage. Afterwards, Mary and Wing and I decided to walk over to the water. The water was incredibly cold, which actually felt pretty good when we waded in, but there were eight million screaming kids, so we didn't stay long. I appreciated Wing being a trooper, as it was really, really hot and she had on a black t-shirt, so she was obviously dying. We were smart enough to take her car, which had air conditioning, and we left right after the water-wading. We decided to go downtown for lunch, and had a nice (and cool) meal at The Blue Tusk, a brewpub in Armory Square. Afterwards, we went over to Sound Garden, an independent music store, and Wing bought a bunch of used CDs. We got home and just relaxed for a while. We wanted to go see Center Stage again, but the only place it was playing was clear on the other side of the city, and I wasn't quite sure where it was. I called Mary, and she said she knew how to get there and she wanted to go. When we arrived, the theater was in a mall, but there were no cars parked outside, and we couldn't find the entrance to the theater. We were running late, so we just parked anywhere. We entered the mall and it was soooo scary. There were no stores. There were no lights. It was just dark and scary and abandoned. Our voices echoed off the tile walls and abandoned store fronts. We finally found the theater and went into the smallest theater ever. My living room is bigger. The movie was every bit as cheese-a-rific as I remembered. Mary enjoyed the bad acting as much as we thought she would. If you enjoy girl cheese, you should see that movie. It's got to be in the dollar theaters by now.

When we got home from the scary Mall the Time Forgot, we watched my two Real World You Never Saw videos, and came to the conclusion that Colin from Hawaii was actually kind of funny. We started to watch the Boston season and the Miami season, but couldn't sustain either one, and decided to go to bed.

Sunday, I had to get up and pick Jim up from the airport. Then the three of us went out to lunch together before Wing hit the road back to Canada. All in all, it was such a fun visit. We both agreed that it was kind of nice that we planned to just veg out the whole time, and I didn't feel obligated to drag her all over everywhere to entertain her, and she didn't feel obligated to withstand museums and stuff. We just watched TV, ate junk food and made snarky comments. And farted. But that's a story for another day.
