I went and bought Office 97 yesterday at the campus bookstore. The school's computers all use Office 97 and we had Office 95 at home. So anytime someone sent me a document or spreadsheet as an attachment, I had to write back and ask them to save it as a 95 version, and then resend it, which I'm sure was annoying. Plus Access (which we use pretty much exclusively in my database class) won't save as a previous version - it's 97 or nothing. Anyway, normally the upgrade alone costs over $200 and the full version is in the $500 neighborhood. At student prices, I got the full version for under $200. Just one more reason why I love being a student. Why are VCRs so complicated? (Oh my, I sounded like Andy Rooney right there.) But really, the VCR is fairly ubiquitous at this point - anyone who has a TV probably also has a VCR, right? You'd think the manufacturers would have gotten their act together and increased the ease of use by now. I'm not even talking about programming the thing or setting the clock - I've got those down. I'm talking about just hooking them up. I wanted to make copies of a tape for my mom and between Antenna In and Video out, there were so many cords I practically made my own spiderweb. You'd think they could just have one in port to handle audio and video, and one out port. Or they could choose more descriptive names or something. I figured the whole thing out, but not before throwing a tape across the room in frustration and nearly missing the cat. Pamie was talking about polyamory today and it got me thinking too. For those of you who don't know, polyamory is the practice of being in a long-term relationship with more than one person. Now I'm all for freedom of expression among consenting adults, but what I don't get are the logistics. I'm not going to go into any more detail because my mom reads this and she must think I'm enough of a freak already. In my group dynamic experience, in any group of three, eventually, at some point, two of the people gang up on the third, whether overtly or covertly. I just don't think nature intended three to be company, despite the TV show. In fact, that's why the saying goes, "Two's company, three's a crowd". Plus, I really really don't want to share my boyfriend with another woman. I'm insecure enough as it is. I don't need a little healthy competition to make me feel MORE inadequate. Molly lent me her Advanced Tae-Bo tape to try out and I'm going to do it today. I watched a bit of it last night and I'm completely horrified. I've gotten pretty good at the Basic, but I can't imagine being able to do what the people on that tape do with their bodies. By the way, Molly and I were discussing how doing the same workout every day can reduce your results, because your body gets into a rut, and you should alternate your workouts for maximum results. Does anyone know anything about this? Is it better to do the same workout every day, or only workout 4 times a week, or work out every day but just do different things? We are both getting a little frustrated because we've been working out with no discernible weight loss (although we are building muscle). If you have any idea, please let me know. It's getting harder to think of things to write about every day. I thought about writing about Kosovo, but I don't feel like I know enough about it to form an intelligent opinion. I don't like war, but I don't like genocide either. Anyway, if you can think of any hot topics, let me know. I'll write about just about anything, really. |
Have you gotten that April 30th gas-out e-mail? Don't believe the hype. Those of you hoping to pick up a cheaper Pentium II computer because of the introduction of the Pentium III should be rewarded soon. Intel and AMD just dropped chip prices. Now, this is ridiculous. The family of that kid who walked into school and shot a bunch of other kids during a prayer meeting are suing the makers of video games and movies. They claim that playing Quake and Mortal Combat, and watching The Basketball Diaries, taught him that you can shoot people without consequences. I have a few problems with this. One, if the kid can't tell the difference between real life and a video game, he's got bigger problems. Two, lots of people play those games and watch that movie. Lots of people don't walk into school with a shotgun and kill people. Give me a freaking break. Some guy made a documentary about people who camped out to see the re-release of Star Wars, and it's being screened at Cannes. |
