About the Woodstock fires and all, it sucks. I mean, I have made fun of the whole Woodstock thing all weekend, since it took place about 45 minutes from here, but it still sucks that a small subgroup of the attendees had to go and ruin it for everyone. I don't understand that kind of destructiveness. I hesitate to use the word riot, because I don't know that that's what it was. But starting fires, burning out trailers, destroying campgrounds, toppling metal towers and exloding propane tanks does sound a bit like a riot, huh? I'll be interested to see what the bands who were performing durnig this whole thing have to say about it. Can you imagine being up on stage and seeing these huge fires flare up?

And I know people are going to blame the music, and that has nothing to do with it, or if it does, it's just a symptom. And people are going to blame "kids today" when I bet there were a lot of non-teenagers involved. It has nothing to do with age and everything to do with attitude, and blatant disregard and lack of respect for property. And also more than a little to do with substance abuse, I'm sure.

I would never go to a huge festival like that, but a lot of people would like the opportunity to go, and now no promoter would take on such a risk. It also sucks that the media is so willing to grab onto a negative and run with it. This story was all over CNN last night. Meanwhile, except for local news, I didn't hear anything about the Phish show here last weekend. Granted, that was only 50,000 people but by all reports it went really well and the locals were pleased. That could be due to the fact that it was Phish, or smaller, or better organized, I don't know. But my point is that unless you are a Phish fan, or live in Central New York, you probably didn't hear much about it.

Ah, enough of that ranting and raving stuff. Pretty boring weekend here. Too hot to do much of anything. Saturday I went over to Jim's parents house to play cards. It was weird to do that and not smoke between games. I'm still smoking but still trying to cut down also. Jim is still smoke-free. I'm not doing so good with the cutting down.

Anyway, then I went out to dinner with some friends from school that I haven't seen all summer. That was cool. I felt kind of weird because I only tangentially hang out with this group of people so I don't always feel like I belong. But it was good to see them, and it will make it less awkward when we all have classes together in the fall. Plus I got a lead on a possible job at school for the fall, so that's exciting.

Oh, to update on Friday's entry, I think we have decided against leasing a car. I just can't see paying that much money and then having nothing to show for it, especially since I don't really care to have a new car. I think instead we are going to buy a used car - somewhere in the $8-10K range from a dealer and finance it so that they payments will still be pretty low. I'm looking at Hondas, Toyotas and Saturns because I know they get good mileage and tend to last a long time. We still haven't resolved the "who gets the new car" thing, but I realized that since Jim will be mostly paying for the new car, he should probably get first dibs. Especially if he lets me drive it once in a while!

Sunday was a nothing day. Jim bought Jagged Alliance 2 and I've been playing it a lot.

One last thought to leave you with. Why have I been hearing so much Prince (or The Artist) on the radio lately? I mean, I get the whole 1999 thing, but I've heard "When Doves Cry", "Let's Go Crazy" and lots of other old school Prince stuff. Is it just part of the 80's nostalgia or what? Just wondering. Peace out.

The Room is an interesting concept, with poor execution. They should have designed it so that when you make a selection, the picture changes to show that selection. Even so, I think the analysis is crap. But still interesting. Thanks to Brig.

While it is a shame (see left), how funny is it that they played Jimi Hendrix's "Fire" while Woodstock burned? Hello? And I would venture a guess that pretzel prices were not to blame.

I'm not sure if this is a sign of hubris or a sense of humor, but Steve Jobs hired Noah Wyle to play him at MacWorld.

Neil Strauss has done some of the best coverage of Woodstock for the New York Times - worth registering for, I think.

TV Guide has done an episode guide for Buffy. That's nice, but not exactly a unique service on the web.

Some people aren't kidding when they say, "The heat is killing me."

Who sings that song that sounds a little bit like Blues Traveler that goes, "Was I out of my head, was I out of my mind?" Help me out here, it's driving me crazy!

Shelley said nice things about me. Thanks!

VH1 Behind the Music Drinking Game.

One last Woodstock link from someone who was there.
