Well, it finally rained last night. Hooray! I actually got to sleep without sweating. OK, probably too much information. I almost bought a digital camera last night. A couple of months ago, in a fit of recklessness, I bid on a Sony Mavica on Ebay for like $200. I can't really afford that, but they're normally $700, so how could I pass it up? I quickly got outbid (which is why I don't usually bid on Ebay - there's always someone willing to pay more for what I want). Anyway, last night some guy e-mailed me and said he had the same camera for sale, and was I interested? He said he would be willing to sell it to me right then, even though his auction was supposed to go for 4 more days. So I checked out his auction, and it was the camera I want, and the price was currently $99! Jim was trying to sleep, so of course I went in and asked him if he thought it was a good idea. He said no. So I kept asking him until he said yes just to get me to go away. I e-mailed the guy back and said I was interested and was the price $99? I was kind of worried about how a guy could sell a brand new, in the box, $700 camera for $99. Was it stolen? Could I get arrested for buying it if it was? Was he using me as a "fence"? (I have no idea what that means, but I saw it on Law and Order once.) The guy e-mailed me back and said he was trying to sell it for $490 but he would sell it to me for $470. Oops. So I wrote him back and thanked him, but no thanks. What a colossal waste of time that was. The worst part is, I got all excited about it. I was thinking about how I could use it on my web pages. Some journalers put a picture of themselves up with each entry. I don't know about that, but I could put up pictures of my cats or something. I know you are all breathing a sigh of relief that I didn't get it now! I had class last night and our regular teacher wasn't there, so we had a TA. He did an OK job, but some of the people in my class are just really annoying. They ask all these questions about things that have NOTHING to do with what we are learning. We were supposed to be learning about tables and frames last night, and people were asking about keyboard shortcuts (like Ctrl+C is Copy and Ctrl-V is Paste). And Alt-Tab to switch windows. Now, I realize those are useful skills to have, but does the teacher need to take time out of our web design class to teach them? I realize in the retelling it sounds like I'm being anal (and I am) but it just took up way more time than it needed to. Then there was this kid sitting in front of me who must have just added the class because he's never been there before. He spent the entire time moving around, banging the chair next to him into the table, flipping through his notebook - I think he had some sort of attention deficit disorder. He was making so much noise that the woman next to him (who didn't speak much English) finally said "You behave yourself!" He was stunned, and turned and looked at me as if to say, "What's up with that." I pointedly avoided his gaze because she was right, but I didn't have enough balls to tell him that. I guess my biggest problem is that the class is a little too basic right now for where I am, and that's my fault, not the other students'. But in a week or so, we should be where I am now, and it will all be new. So I should just stop bitching about it, or drop the class. There, I feel better now. |
For an assignment for class, we had to look at these two sites: being a geek, I enjoyed them. You might too. Although I have a hard time believe surveys since I took TWO statistical methods classes. Not bragging, just surprised that I just realized I took two (one undergrad, one grad). Hmm, maybe I could have opted out of that second one! I've been looking for a Javascript site to help me learn how to do something for my internship. This one is pretty good. Diane Patterson posted a great review of Limbo, the new John Sayles film, and now I want to see it. Have I mentioned lately how much I love Webmonkey? I have learned so much from that site. Thanks, Webmonkey! OK, so I enjoy saying Webmonkey. If that's wrong, I don't want to be right. Whoo! I'm linked right out. I got nothing left. Oh wait, one more. The first quarter Diarist.net awards have been announced. If you're looking for some good, quality journals, this is a good place to start. And if you haven't read Pamie's tiny wooden hand entry, please do so immediately. |
