Before I finish my tale of last weekend, I had to answer some burning questions. No, I didn't buy a whole new outfit. I was trying on dresses and realized that the one I liked best was remarkably similar to one I already owned. So I bought new accessories instead.

And I got a haircut and I'm really digging it. It's kind of a bob. I bought a bunch of those cute little pins and clips with dragonflies on them, but I'm hair style deficient - I couldn't get them to look right so I went au naturel. I need to practice some more. The only thing I could kind of do was pull my hair back with about 5 of those mini-butterfly clips like Julie from Felicity does.

I made a new friend at the accessory store. I walked in and kind of looked at the rack of hair products. The girl behind the counter looked at me and I said, "Hi. I just got my hair cut and I want to use some of these things, but I have no idea which ones to get. Could you help me?" So she came over and showed me which ones were most popular, etc. I think she thought I was crazy because I kept saying things like "I always see that one on Party of Five, but I don't know if I can pull it off." She looked at me like, "Whatever."

Anyway, to continue yesterday's story...we went up to Bud's and walked in. It was the biggest dive ever, and I've been in some bad places before. There were ceiling tiles missing and it was about as big as my apartment (read: not very). And there was obviously a 3 tattoo minimum that I somehow skirted around, based on the people I saw. Now personally, I wouldn't have minded. But I felt responsible for the people I was with, and it just wasn't their type of place. They put on their brave faces and stayed through the first set, but most of them skedaddled soon after. I stayed through the second set, but I wanted to go home and take a nap. Jim stayed behind to ride home with Terry, and in case anyone needed a designated driver (it was $5 all you can eat and drink). Apparently, after I left, things got even scarier. One woman took her shirt off, beer was flying all over the place, people were jumping up and down...just chaos.

We had decided to go to Coleman's because we heard various members of our class were going to be there. The official reunion activity for the evening was some sort of gala, which cost $50/plate I think. So all the poor recent graduates skipped out on that one. We ended up meeting at Coleman's and it was a retread of the previous night - we just ended up talking to the people we came with. As we were leaving, some people we could have hung out with were walking in, but they all live in Syracuse anyway. We see them all the time. Plus, we had decided to go to Phantom Menace again.

In retrospect, it would have been much better to orchestrate our own reunion weekend. Invite all the people we did want to see to come to a local bar or restaurant, and make it one night only. Then we could all go to breakfast the next morning and everyone could be on their merry way. They could stay in town for the weekend and do some shopping or see the sights, or they could take off early. Or we could break up into smaller groups and do something different, if people wanted to catch up with their former roommate or something. As it stood, Saturday was pretty much a waste of everyone's time. We were all so tired by the end of the day.

It was good to see the people I did hang out with. I wish it didn't take a reunion for us to all get together. It just all brought back that my class was very cliquey in college and people didn't venture much outside their own group. I still see most of my group. I didn't really need to see other groups, because they didn't hang out with me in college and probably don't really want to hang out with me now. Maybe as I get older, that will change. It's just that in college, we all had something in common - school. Now that we are out in the world, we are all in such different places in our lives. Some people are married with kids, some are single, some are rising fast in their careers, some aren't, some are going back to school, some still live at home with their parents. It's hard for me, as a single non-parent, to sustain a conversation for three days with someone who is married with three kids, when all we really have in common is the fact that we went to the same college. I could find things to talk about to fill up a few hours, sure. But once you get beyond the "So, what are you up to?" and "Remember the time we...", the conversation dies out.

It just felt like a relief to get back to my normal, boring routine. That is not a knock against any of my college friends. I am just a boring, humdrum person. Heh, the word humdrum reminds me of Richie Cunningham. Thus endeth the tale of my 5 year college reunion. I promise not to talk about it anymore. I'll stick to more exciting topics like "People Who Annoy Me in Class" and "My Cats: Why They are Great".

A researcher from UCLA is beginning a huge, multinational study to determine the impact the advent of computers and the Internet has had on our lives. I, for one, think it sounds fascinating.

This article about TV shows that won't be back next season made me mad at ABC all over again. First, they cancel "My So-Called Life" and then "Cupid". What are they thinking?

Phantom Menace busts another box office record, hitting $250 million in 19 days. Austin Powers comes out this weekend though, so I foresee a decline soon. But I don't think the movie was a failure, either artistically or commercially.

I have to say, I haven't really been following the whole music industry vs. MP3 battle, but it looks like the music industry will soon be winning.

Why are PCs so bland looking? There's no reason. It's about time someone put some color into a PC.

I really, really, really hope that Leonardo DeCaprio doesn't get cast as Anakin in Star Wars: Episode II. Not because I don't like Leo, but because I don't want to hear 8 million Star Wars fans whine about it.

There are a ton of good links at Camworld today. Rather than rip them off, I'll just link to Cameron and you can go from there.

Hey, I added navigation links at the bottom of the page too, so you don't have to scroll up to go back or forward.
