So, how was your weekend? Saturday, we helped Terry and Stimp move into their new place. Well, Jim helped and I stood around and talked to Mary. When we arrived, there were already 5 or so people carrying stuff out to the truck. Plus, you know, I had to finish my coffee. And I haven't seen Mary in a few weeks. So I caught up with her while the boys all carried stuff out to the truck. Then when the truck got full, I rode with Mary over to the new place to get it all unlocked and ready. It's really quite a nice place. Stimp and our college friend Chuck are going to live on the first floor. Mary and Terry are going to live on the second floor. And there's this awesome basement that is going to be the boys' "clubhouse". It's finished and pretty big, and the boys can have all their Star Wars stuff down there, and hold their weekly poker nights down there as well. There's even a pretty decent sized back yard with a cool brick grill. I can't wait until they get settled in and we can have a cookout! Nothing like inviting myself over. So once the boys carried everything in, Mary and I started moving things into the right room. We got the mattress and boxspring set up, and made the bed. We laid down the rug and started figuring out how to arrange the living room. The living room is big, but kind of odd shaped. Plus, I think at one time their apartment was the attic, so there are interesting nooks and crannies, and lots of storage space, and the ceilings are lower in some places. So arranging it is going to be a challenge. But I think it's a perfect first apartment for a couple. It's bigger than the first place Jim and I had! Terry is a complete neat freak. The night before they moved in, he and Mary went over to the new place and cleaned it up. Now, that's totally understandable. I also would have mopped and vacuumed, cleaned the bathroom, wiped out the cabinets, maybe even cleaned out the fridge and oven. But Terry washed down the walls! I would never even think to do that unless they were obviously dirty with big smudges or somthing. As one of their friends said, "I don't wash the walls. I just paint." Good point, that. The boys were nice enough to provide lunch from the Dinosaur BBQ, and boy was it good. Then I had to leave for ANOTHER group meeting at 2:00 for this database project. It lasted until 7:00 or so, but we got just about everything finalized, except our presentation slides. I got home, fixed up a few things in our report, did the presentation slides and watched some TV before bed. Sunday we went fishing with Jim's brother and sister-in-law on Onondaga Lake. For those of you not familiar with Central NY, this lake is extremely polluted, so you aren't allowed to eat the fish you catch. And sometimes you catch mutant fish with like 3 eyes, like on the Simpsons! I wasn't really in it for the fishing - I just wanted to do something outside because it was such a beautiful day. Alongside the lake, there is a paved path where people can walk, ride bikes or roller blade. It's a great people watching spot. So I mostly watched people. They only caught 2 fish, which is much lower than normal. At one point, we were going over some pilings (I think a pier or something used to be there) and the boat got stuck! Jim's brother had to jump out of the boat and push us off. Of course, I forgot sunscreen and Jim and I both got burned. Oops! So he's all sore from moving and playing tennis and sunburned too. After fishing I had (all together now) another group meeting. This one was fairly short - we just had to run through the presentation and put all our reports together to hand in. The actual presentation is today at 2:00. Please send me good thoughts! After this presentation, I just have a paper and a final left. The light is shining through the end of the tunnel. Whew! That's a lot. See you all tomorrow. |
Builder.com (which is part of the excellent stable of sites provided by C-net) has created the Web Innovator Awards. It's interesting to see what some of the people in the industry think of as important innovations. The Brunching Shuttlecocks site has a great feature called Ratings. They take innocuous categories such as Kids Songs or Video Games, and rate them. It's great. MTV is premiering the ne Star Wars video today at 3:30 p.m. ET. For those of you with jobs, VH1 will then show it five times back-to-back at 6:00 p.m. The song is composed by John Williams and performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. I'm just happy it's orchestral, and not a song like the Cantina Theme or whatever that song was from the re-release. It would be really annoying if Lucas et al decided to make a rocking Star Wars song. At least this song is something that could be used in the movie without sounding out of place. Also some new figures went on sale last night...don't have anything more to say about that. |
