So, I tried to write something about the Emmy Awards. I went over to Mary's a little after 6, and we watched the E! preshow, and then the awards. I even had a little notebook and was writing stuff down. But it was all pretty boring. I mean, I don't even watch a lot of the shows that were nominated, either because I don't like them (NYPD Blue) or I don't get that channel (The Sopranos). Plus, I can't believe there are people out there who still think 3rd Rock From the Sun is funny. Or that the most recent season of Frasier deserves some awards. And not unlike the MTV Awards, the same people/shows were nominated over and over again. I realize that a lot of television is crap, but branch out a little. And no one (except the nominees) cares about "Best Direction in a Miniseries". Well, that one was funny because the guy who won was named "Thomas Schlomme" and Tracey Ullman presented and she yelled out, "It's Tommy Schlomme" and his last name rhymes with his first. So that was amusing. Also, the little bits about Felicity taking a new direction and Jon Stewart as a writer for Dawson's Creek were funny. But Jenna Elfman bugs me. She needs to learn that saying things in a funny voice does not equal comedy. The content of what you are saying also needs to be funny, and it wasn't. I appreciate her trying to lighten up the tone of the show a bit, but it got real old, real fast. Plus her dress was ugly. Speaking of ugly dresses, I bought People's Best and Worst Dressed issue last night. While I agree with most of the picks, one thing kind of bothered me. The featured celebrities were portrayed as ALL best or ALL worst, with no in between. Like Shania Twain was picked as Worst Dressed, and with the pictures they chose, I would agree. But I know that I have also seen her look amazing, and none of those photos were included. I think it would have been more interesting to say, "Shania typically dresses terribly, but she has potential, as evidenced by this one photo." Of course, that would be expecting subtlety from People, and that's just silly. I also bought Talk magazine this weekend. What a waste of time. So boring. The interview with Elizabeth Taylor was repetitive and revealed nothing new. I mean, it's Elizabeth Taylor, for crying out loud. She has GOT to have a few interesting stories to tell. Instead, the reporter just kept asking her about Michael Jackson. The rest of the issue fell just as flat. I also bought some books this weekend. I finished one called Tribe Apart, and it was amazing. It's non-fiction about a woman who decides to study a group of teens in suburban Virginia to try and decipher all the pressures and trials of being a teenager today. She picked a really good cross-section of teens to follow, from varying economic and social backgrounds, and particuarly from different family situations. The book was extremely well-written, and I felt it did a great job of pointing out what is different about being a teen today from 10, 20 or 30 years ago. Apparently, when the shootings at Columbine happened, this woman was all over the media, and she addresses that in a postscript to the book. So go read it. |
Warning: clicking on these links will launch a new browser window. Since I didn't do an Emmy summary, read this one instead. It's much more interesting than my comments, anyway. Or read this one, with some interesting backstage moments. And then read Ken Tucker's commentary for EW. So you won't see Kevin Costner's penis in For Love of the Game. This is a tragedy? And why isn't it called For THE Love of the Game? The Woodstock promoters respond to Ad-Rocks' commentary at the MTV Music Video Awards. I would still like to see the promoters take some responsibility for inadequate security measures, though. If you like weblogs, but can't keep them organized, then this site is for you. That "Mambo #5" song sure is catchy. I'm sure I'll be sick of it in about 10 more minutes. Am I the only one who finds Wanda from Watch With Wanda really annoying? |
